Welcome to 12th Street!
About 12th Street:
This early childhood site consists of two self-contained classrooms that have a 6:1:1 ratio and 3 pre-K classrooms which have an 8:1:2 ratio. Each classroom has a teacher and at least one paraprofessional. Additional staff includes Speech Therapists, an Adaptive Physical Education teacher, a Science/Discovery teacher, Art-based instructions, Occupational Therapists, and a Physical Therapist.
Our youngest students experience a structured approach to learning. Teachers create a visually supportive environment to reinforce the concepts, vocabulary and skills that are taught. Our Speech Therapists work closely with the classroom teachers using PECS and Mayer Johnson symbols to develop academic and communciation skills. Social stories and the modeling of socially appropriate behaviors are introduced. Our students participate in activities with the general education nursery school housed in the building.
Students in the program are given educational experiences in a variety of natural settings, which are reality-based, functional, and multi-sensory. This includes weekly walks within the neighborhood. The curriculum is reality-oriented with an emphasis on communication, socialization and life skills. Academic instruction is based on teacher assessment of the child's needs through a developmental approach. Parental involvement is encouraged to strengthen the home-school relationship. Through this kind of programming, our children become more aware of themselves and their environment.
